Calvert SCD Promotes Conservation at County Farm Tour
By Rowan Harris
The mission of Calvert Soil Conservation District is to reach out to farmers and landowners with information and support concerning ways to protect our natural resources. That is why Calvert SCD participated in the Calvert County Farm Tour, hosted by Reverie Acres, in Port Republic, on Sunday July 15. Conservationists had a chance to talk to everyone from teachers to farmers. It was an occasion to provide information on the many activities and programs the District is involved in. Highlights included sharing information on sustainable horse farming, the high school Envirothon competition, and Chesapeake Bay health. Conservationists discussed pasture management and rotational grazing with a number of farmers, as well as state and federal cost share programs. These practices have a huge impact on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Nature education can begin young, so Calvert SCD supplied educational coloring books. Attracting the children also drew in parents and gave soil conservationists a chance to talk about backyard conservation and outdoor activities around the county.
Soil Conservation Districts are made up of teams of federal, state, and local employees working together. The District works to provide technical and financial assistance to implement land management practices. Assistance programs, too, are a blend of state and federal funding. Current conservationists try to inspire future conservationists.
