Opening Day at Jefferson Patterson Park

Opening day at Jefferson Patterson Park is an annual event for district staff. Since its inception in 1999 this event has attracted many area residents to the park for a day of family fun. Activities include kite flying contests for the children and guided tours of the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Archeological Conservation Lab, and various historical sites located on park property. Scheduled each year to coincide with Earth Day, Opening Day provides the District an opportunity to promote the importance of conserving our soil and other natural resources. This year's event was held on Saturday, April 18.Our display featured the living things in soil. Children drawn to the display used magnifying glasses to search through tubs of fresh topsoil looking for worms, beetles, grubs, and other soil "critters." Jenny took the opportunity to teach the children about the dynamic world that exists right under their feet and how these creatures promote healthy, productive soils in our forests, around our homes, and on our farms.

Career Day

Calvert Soil Conservation District regularly gives career presentations to local elementary schools. This year Rowan Harris gave conservation career presentation to students at Mutual Elementary School and Calvert Elementary School.  Students enthusiastically discussed the importance of farming.  Rowan explained how employees of the District use math, science, and problem solving to assist farmers.   The kids especially enjoyed the Conservation Bingo game that was played at the end of the presentations that incorporates  conservation-related pictures into traditional Bingo game.

Technical Assistance Fund

Occasionally, the district offers summer positions to high school and college students to help promote conservation programs.

Envirothon
